 THE UN SYSTEM IN EGYPT

Egypt has been a member of the United Nations since its establishment in 1945 and a key player in the organization ever since. Besides being a major actor within the Organization on peace and security issues, with particular reference to the Middle East peace process, Egypt has a long tradition of engagement and cooperation with the UN, its main bodies, the specialized Agencies, Funds and Programs, some of which have been supporting the country for more than half a century.

The UN system in the country is currently represented by twenty-four Agencies that are supporting Egypt and its people in a variety of ways. While each of these agencies pursue their specific mandate, they all collaborate within the framework of the Resident Coordinator System and support the implementation at the country level of the UN Secretary General Program of Reform.

With regard to partnerships, the UN is solidly engaged in working together with the donor community to ensure that the benefits of development cooperation to Egypt are maximized, both in terms of priority setting and effective implementation, through the Donor Assistance Group (DAG) framework.
